Dog nails grow constantly throughout their life, and unless worn down through regular walks on hard surfaces, it is common for overgrowth to occur. Nail clipping is not a painful experience, however, many dogs do not like having their feet touched. To get them used to it, we advise handling the feet regularly, gently massaging the toes and webbing. Praise can be used to reward good behaviour, and when started early in life, this ensures having the feet touched is a positive experience.
In well-behaved dogs with light coloured nails, it may be possible to trim the claws at home. However, in more challenging cases or individuals with very dark claws, it may be advisable to have this performed by a vet or nurse. If you are in any doubt, please contact the surgery to arrange an appointment with a member of our veterinary team.
