From November 2018, Parkside, along with several other local veterinary practices in Tayside, will be utilising the dedicated emergency service provider Vets Now to handle our out-of-hours accident and emergency cover. This will be based at our Kings Cross Road surgery in Dundee.

 

Who are Vets Now?

 

Vets Now provide a dedicated out of hours emergency and critical care service for pets. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Fife, Vets Now already partner with over 1,000 veterinary practices across the UK to ensure that pets have access to the best possible care day and night.  The Vets Now team, made up of highly skilled emergency vets and nurses, are dedicated to out-of-hours emergency and critical care so they are ready and waiting should you have a pet emergency in the middle of the night or over the weekend. Our Farm and Equine clients will not be affected by these changes and our Large Animal team will remain on hand to deal with any farm and equine emergencies as before.

 

Why make these changes?

 

We have previously provided our own on call service but feel that the time has now come to further develop and improve our small animal out-of-hours care. By working in partnership with Vets Now we can for the first time in Tayside ensure that we have both a Veterinary Surgeon  and a Veterinary Nurse available and working throughout the night should an emergency arise. Their night-time role will allow closer monitoring of our inpatients and ensure they are on hand immediately should they be required, they will also have full access to your pet’s clinical history. We will ensure staff are resident 24/7, 365 days a year at our Kings Cross Road Surgery.  This issue has been brought to our attention by many clients over the last year and we will now be the ONLY practice in Tayside to be able to offer this standard of care. 

 

Emergency and critical care medicine and surgery for pets has become a very specialised area, with all of us wanting the best possible care for our pets at all times of the day and night.  Vets Now focus entirely on this aspect of veterinary care and so can provide a team of vets and nurses highly trained in these areas at nights and weekends.

 

We will now be able to provide appointments seven days a week ensuring that we are available for your pets more often than ever before with the back of up of expert emergency out-of-hours care. 

 

What does this mean for Parkside Veterinary Group clients?


Our main surgery in Dundee will act as the ‘host practice’ for Vets Now which means that there will be no change for our clients in where they take their pets in cases of emergency.  Our emergency phone number remains the same – 01382 810777.  If your pet is hospitalised with us then the Vets Now team will treat and care for them through the night, working to a care plan drawn up by us and discussed with the critical care team at a handover meeting each evening.  A second handover meeting will take place early each morning between Vets Now and Parkside staff to ensure there is full communication about each hospitalised pet’s progress through the night.

 

 What hours will Vets Now be operating at our practice?

 

Vets Now will operate Monday to Friday 7pm to 8.30am, Saturday from 5.pm until Monday at 8.30am

 

Parkside will provide additional consulting at the Dundee surgery on Saturdays until 5pm and at Barnhill until 12pm.  The Barnhill branch will also be open on Sundays mornings (routine pre-booked appointments only). This latter measure should hopefully improve the situation for clients who struggle to get weekday appointments due to work commitments.

 

Our two principal aims are to be able to provide the best possible level of clinical expertise to your pets in an out-of-hours emergency situation, whilst at the same time extending our opening hours and ensuring that the practice is fully staffed during the day for you with the familiar, experienced and highly qualified team of vets and nurses we have here at Parkside Vets.

We know your pet can become ill or suffer accidents at any time. To make sure you have access to high quality care at night, weekends and bank holidays, we have chosen to partner with Vets Now, the leading provider of Out of Hours care. 

The team at Vets Now are always there when we are closed, so you can rest assured that you and your pet will have a vet and nurse on hand, whether it's four in the morning or half-way through Christmas. Their fully qualified staff will provide free advice over the phone and advise whether you need to take your pet into their clinic for immediate treatment. Please don’t hesitate to call them if you’re at all concerned.

By using Vets Now to cover our Out of Hours Emergencies it enables our vets and nurse to get a good night’s rest at nights and weekends so we can continue providing the high quality care during the day that we pride ourselves on.
Vets Now take over from us when we close in the evenings and at the weekends from Saturday 5.00pm onwards.  It is always best to call us first as we will either be there to answer your call, or will have an answer machine message with Vets Now’s details for you.  Vets Now can give you advice over the phone and arrange immediate appointments to see them if it is required.
Please be aware that because of the nature of Out of Hours emergencies, a night-time or weekend appointment will be more expensive than seeing a vet during usual hours. Vets Now will discuss this with you at the time of appointment and before commencing any treatment.

You will be seen by one of our 5 dedicated Equine and Farm Vets out of hours – please dial the usual number 01382 811111 – you will be diverted to our answering service when we are closed.  The staff at the answering service will take all of your details and pass them on to the Large Animal vet on call who will contact you.
