Although Parkside is a mixed practice the large animal and small animal teams are separate so that small animal vets will only every carry out small animal duties. There are 10 full time and 6 part time vets in the small animal team.

The main surgery is in Dundee with a small animal branch surgery in Broughty Ferry and a larger branch in Barnhill. Both Dundee and Barnhill have full operating facilities, radiography, ultrasonography, in house laboratories etc. Small routine operations are carried out at Broughty Ferry. All hospitalised animals are kept at Dundee.

We aim to practise to a very high standard while still being sensitive to clients’ needs and expectations. We have an Advanced Veterinary Practitioner in small animal orthopaedics and certificate holder (soon to be AVP) in small animal surgery. We would welcome certificate holders and those with aspirations to gain a certificate in any discipline.

We do our own out of hours work. The small animal rota is currently 1 in 11. We do our on call as full week, ie on call all weekend then every night the following week but we are off during the day and start just before evening surgery. There is always a qualified nurse on call.

CPD is encouraged and funded with approval of the Partners. Should a vet wish to do extra CPD eg study for a certificate we will support and fund this with an arrangement for recovering some of the cost of the CPD should the vet leave the practice within two years of finishing the course. In the course of a normal week we work one 6.30pm finish, one 5.30 finish and two 5.00pm finishes and a half day finishing at lunchtime.

We give 32 days holiday a year, 4 of which are taken at Christmas/New Year. Salary is commensurate with experience and no accommodation or car is provided as the tax is prohibitive, although business mileage is paid.
